The normal season consists of 22 episodes spread from late September to
late
May, i.e. about 35 weeks. That means there are going to be a lot of
re-runs
or preemptions, no matter how you slice it. Since most episodes are
actually aired in three time periods - Late September to Late November;
Late
January to the end of February; and Mid or late April to late May that
means
almost all the other time is going to be reruns or preemptions.
Some shows do air differently. "24" starts late and runs with few or any
interruptions. They did the same thing with Alias this year.
This type of scheduling may become more common, but it is still rare now.
