What I took from the scene was that Ryan isn't literally the Devil, he's
Joan's opposite number.  He talks to the Devil and he gets assignments to
start negative ripples.

Of course, Barbara Hall could go ****rley Jackson on us (I think it was
****rley Jackson, although the memory is the first to go.  A short story
about a kindly old man who travels through the day doing random good deeds
and acts of kindness.  At the end of the day, he goes home and talks about
the day with his wife, who has been going around doing random evil deeds.
They decide to switch off the next day.)
