I found much of this episode, with the knitting god, to be terribly 
formulaic. 

This is writing-by-numbers.  God does X, where X is some normal thing.  
Joan exclaims "God does X?!?"  After two seasons, traces of any 
character development on Joan's part are faint.

The introduction of the new guy was the only element that really got my 
attention.  Here's hoping they do something interesting with it.
