Could be neither.  While not prevalent, some 'modern' Catholic Churches
have 
a bare cross in the sanctuary.  The General Instruction of the Roman
Missal 
says that a crucifix must be present for Mass so usually the parishes with
a 
large bare cross use a Processional Cross with a corpus, keeping it near
the 
altar during Mass.
