I don't think the season was too dark at all.  I like dark.  Dark
*usually*
draws me in.  But this season has done nothing for me.  I think it's
because
Joan herself has always been very much a drama-queen, which I'm not
faulting, just stating a fact.  But in Season 1 you had Luke and Grace as
a
nice counter-point which kept the drama from running away with the show.

I would also disagree with the 'too subtle' part.  If anything, I think
this
season has been more prone to beat us over the head with it's ideas.
