The perfect change of direction, which would have solved one of the show's

longstanding problems too, would have been a season-opening arc of Devil
Guy 
and Joan engaging in an extended cat-and-mouse game resulting in Will's 
death. It would propel the season with all kinds of storylines and
eliminate 
Will's usually superfluous ones at the same time. If they had started this

process midway through the second season, it might have actually had a 
third.
