At the time they filmed it, they didn't know it was going to be
cancelled -- Ryan Hunter was intended to be Joan's adversary for
season 3. They knew that they were kinda iffy on renewal, so this was
one of the changes that they agreed to in hopes of getting an s3. If
they'd known they were going to get cancelled before they filmed it,
they would almost certainly have come up with a far more conclusive
ending.
