For those that aren't aware yet, Scrapheap has a spin-off short series
called Scrappy Races. A number of ex-Scrapheap teams get 1500 pounds
to build a fully roadworthy vehicle which will tested each week in a
variety of challenges. The teams each get a day in a local scrapyard
to adapt their vehicle to the challenge ahead.
After viewing the first programme, I can say that it's absolute top
stuff. It's the usual Scrapheap presenters and a good variety of
eccentric teams. Anything which has a 16 cylinder turbocharged Rolls
Royce engine in just has to be entertaining!
Also of interest might be a BBC programme called Rough Science. At the
start of the series a collection of scientists (they sound dull but
aren't, they are scientists in the same way that Scrapheap challengers
are design engineers) are flown out to an exotic location. In previous
series they have had a deserted island off Italy, a remote river in
New Zealand, and currently Death Valley in California. Each week the
team has 3 days to complete certain tasks. This can be either by
building something (such as a ****table refrigeration system for a
space suit type garment) or by pure hard work and mathematic ability
and research (such as working out the size of the meteorite that
caused the Arizona crater). Only 30 minute programmes, but lots of
science and plenty of entertainment for the less scientific among us
(my mum loves it).
I'm guessing you may get Rough Science on BBC America, but I don't
know if you are likely to get Scrappy Racers.
Mike.
