The US uses an alternate date format. Since this is a US event, then
it seemed appropriate to use their terminology.

I am sure that you know the date of September 11, 2001. This was when
the suspected (and yet to be confirmed) Al-Qaeda launched a rather
shocking attack against the twin towers of the World Trade Center. Not
to forget the Pentagon of course.

What happened on November 11 is my mother's birthday. :-]
