In the mean time, have you checked out "Design Squad" on PBS Kids?
http://pbskids.org/designsquad/
It is good clean competition without the scavenging component but a keen
emphasis on design and problem solving with High School aged competitors.
The first season's 13 episodes are up on the site for viewing - broadband
highly suggested.
This was the show I saw an article about in 'Physics Today' and wrote in
about. The letter was a comparison of Junkyard-Wars and Design Squad and
was
published in the June issue. I had them include my email address and got
one
excited question so far from an Oxford alumni asking details about
Scrapheap-Challenge ... and my name (Which I share with a famous physicist
-
no relation).
