JaneAnne Narrin posted a blog a out the new Green Block of programming the
Sundance Channel will be airing sometime in the next two months. Here is
one
of the series they will be airing: "Its Not So Easy Being Green" which
shows
a family in England who decided to go totally Green. This looks like it
will
be an interesting series. Here is the Press Release:
Sundance Channel has acquired the U.S television rights to "Its Not Easy
Being Green," an eight-part, half-hour do***entary series from the BBC
that
follows a British family of four as they turn their backs on suburban life
to create a completely green yet modern household in the country. The
series
will premiere as part of Sundance Channel's THE GREEN destination which
launches in 1st quarter 2007. The acquisition was announced today by Laura
Michalchyshyn, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Programming
and
Creative Affairs, Sundance Channel. The series was acquired from BBC
Worldwide Americas and is produced by Jonny Young, Susanna Hardslip and
Claire Martin.
Its Not Easy Being Green" follows the Strawbridge family - parents Richard
and Brigit and children Charlotte, 19, and James, 21 - as they move out of
their comfortable home in the suburbs to a rundown farmhouse in Cornwall
to
pursue a completely green and self-sufficient way of life. The
Strawbridges,
with the help of an eco-engineer and an experienced organic farmer, learn
to
wean themselves from their dependence on fossil fuel and live in ways that
produce little to no waste -while also keeping their feet firmly planted
in
the 21st century. Projects featured on "It's Not Easy Being Green" include
a
custom-made water wheel used to generate all of the electricity for the
home, a shower heated by solar power, a permaculture garden, and the
creation of homemade biodiesel fuel. "'Its Not Easy Being Green' is a
fascinating and thoroughly entertaining look at an ordinary family who
have
accomplished extraordinary things for the sake of living more
responsibly,"
commented Michalchyshyn, "The result is truly inspiring, and this series
is
an exceptional addition to our lineup for Sundance Channel GREEN."

Continuing from last week's progress, the Strawbridge family were equally
as
productive in last night's episode (6) of Its Not Easy Being Green. Dick
Strawbridge and his right hand man, Jim, installed a solar heating system
for the spring water. The solar kit according to Dick, was reasonably
priced
and the Strawbridge's now have free hot water. In the winter, the
woodburner
will be used to heat water, whilst the immersion heater is a 'last
resort'.
Despite a mass of pipework, Jim declared that a general plumber could
'easily' build a similar hot water system. Their aim to be self sufficient
for energy is clearly going really well. Even the water wheel is providing
excess electricity and Briget Strawbridge was able to power fairy lights
on
a garden tree.
In contrast to the positive eco-house renovations was the subdued
slaughter
of the pigs, which they had reared on the farm. As well as providing food,
the pigs had done a good job improving the land; as Ander, the gardener
put
it, the pigs are "nature's own tractors and rotovators". There was a clear
gender divide, Briget did not want to see or become involved in the
subsequent slaughter. Dick and son James on the other hand saw this as a
job
that had to be done. Together with the slaughterman, the father and son
slaughtered the animal in the most 'efficient' way. They justified their
actions; James stating that its better to know that the animals were well
cared for. He noted that they now have a full understanding of what
happens
before a piece of ****k is served up on a plate. Briget felt that this may
be
her turning point to vegetarianism.
Next week - a compost loo is built, together with a bigger and better wind
turbine. Plus Donnachadh McCarthy returns to cast an eye over their new
greener life. Its Not Easy Being Green is shown on Tuesdays at 8.30pm,
BBC2.
For more information and links on the products used see the Its Not Easy
Being Green website. There is also a book to accompany the series.
