Just one simple example:
In ten years time (after they've made a different version) you look in
your TV listings and see that "Knight Rider" is being re-run ... which
Knight Rider is it??
On the other hand, if they actually used a different name, even
marginally different, then you look in your TV listing and see "Knight
Rider 2007" is what they re-running.
The first cause confusion and disappointment when someone wanting one
version tunes in to find it's the other version. The second option
causes absolutely no confusion at all and those wanting to watch that
particular version can tune in while those not wanting to don't bother.

And the Battlestar Galactica change from "family entertainment" to
"over-***ed realism" isn't "drastic"?!?!?
Take it the other direction - Coca-Cola decides to ****p all it's
products in the same bottle and name, no more "Diet Coke" or "Cherry
Coke" (or whatever), just one bottle labelled "Coke" and you take your
chances as to whats actually inside the bottle.
Or maybe we simply label every "coke" falvoured drink as "Coca-Cola" -
no need to distinguish between actual Coca-Cola or Pepsi or ...
Hell, let's go the whole hog and replace every name / noun with the
name "It" instead - it makes no difference that all the various "its"
are different. Now you can "it down to the it and it an it of it".
Great! :-\

I did say they had the decenty to do that which does give some
separation for their own version and silly ideas.
