Personally, I don't feel that this was the reason it was done though.
As I've said before, I suspect it was highly budget related. When
you're starting a new series and you don't really know how it's going
to go, you don't get a huge budget to start with. If you know you're
going to be doing stunts with supposedly the same car each week,
you've got to know you can keep supplying them and you've got to think
long and hard about what car you can afford to replace once or twice
per episode. I suspect also, that it was easy to get engineers to work
on the Trans Am too, to fix things up and to create the KITT specific
changes.
I really don't think that the idea was to base it on a car that seemed
quite common to the viewers. I may be wrong, but I've certainly never
read that.

I guess it might seem different if you're an American. The idea of a
Swedish car being the new body for KITT is a little hard to swallow. I
guess you'd still want it to be an American car, and hopefully a newer
Trans Am.
But even so, I'd be *shocked* if they made a modern day Knight Rider
film, and KITT was still based on an 80's Trans Am.
