There are two reasons beyond the cost that I can think of why they
wouldn't want to do the Turbo Boost thing, and, while I'm not sure I
agree with them, I can see some logic to it:
First, they may just not have been able to come up with a way that
wouldn't have looked silly. Let's face it, a jumping car is a bit
silly, especially by 21st century sensibilities. Slo-mo-big-air has
such an 80s feel to it that it's hard to do it nowadays without
evoking memories of a simpler, campier time in television history,
with its overuse by The Dukes of Hazzard, and pretty much every cop
drama of the 80s. It's just a visual effect with too many unwanted
connotations now.
Secondly, they might have viewed the Turbo Boost as "The original
series's 'thing'", and wanted to deliberately avoid it in order to
establish themselves as their own thing and not look too much like
they were just doing a rehash of a show that's now close to thirty
years old.
