I always got the impression that Operations and Madeline were more than
just partners ..... I don't remember the name of the episode that I just
saw recently,.... it was the one where George finally meets his just
reward and he questions the two of them as to whether they were lovers
or was it all a big act for everyone else's benefit, all these years.
Operations said that they were NOT.... Do you think that was just
another lie .... if so, why bother at this stage of George's life? Just
wondered. To me, there was never any question when that curtain of
darkness was drawn.... Thanks for your answers....

Well, from several eps. we know they were technically lovers, as in
having slept together. Was there affection, even love, in that part of
the relationship? In my opinion, not really, not anymore. For Paul, it
was a chance to reconnect with a long ago time, which included some
(positive) emotion. In other words, to sleep with Maddy (at the time we
know them) was 'comfortable' - not unlike an old t-shirt, faded and full
of holes, but there is nothing which feels better when you need
'comfort'.
For Maddy, the physical relationship was an occasional necessity, and
Paul was convenient. He was also probably the one person around whom
Maddy felt secure enough to be truly herself for a little while. I use
'secure' in the sense that she knew Paul would not gossip about what
occurred behind closed doors.
The single emotion binding the 'Siamese Twins' to each other was respect
- as much for the work done and the sacrifices made to do the work as
for the person. Section was, to them (and to me, also) like a living
entity (another cast member). It was a third person in virtually every
Paul/Maddy or Ops./Maddy encounter.
