I think men make the mistake of thinking that women want the "bad boy".
I suspect it's more like they want the "dating/seductive capable", which
may too often be in the same package as the bad guy. In other words,
they aren't interested in being abused by a man, but those men have
somehow magically gained the ability to approach women, and they
respond to that. Or maybe such men just aren't put off by rejection,
so they can go through a whole string of women being pretty blatant
until the hit one that responds.
So the "nice guys" think it's awful that women are attracted to "bad
boys" when it's simply that they aren't approaching the women, and
approaching them with skill, so the women end up with the "bad boys"
rather than men who will treat them right. In effect, "being nice" means
that they will hesitate to approach women, but that is exactly what's
needed.
