Just an idea, but maybe it's Kryptonian gnetics.  Maybe, naturally
speaking, 
Krypton is a harsh place sans technology, and biologically children of the

opposite sex 'imprint; somehow on each other at a young age.  Clark 
imprinted on Lana, but as Lana isn't Kryptonian, she didn't Clark.  She
just 
sees him as her Clueless former boyfriend whom she's attracted to.  It'll 
take years at MU for that imprinting to switch off and move to Lois -  in 
the Smallville Universe, anyway
