You will may like this--an excerpt from the original Pilot script that was
either cut or re-written:
45. INT. HAYLOFT - BARN - NIGHT
This is Clark's sanctuary, his fortress of solitude. He stares
out across the fields that are silvered with moonlight, peers
into the telescope that is pointed up at the stars.
46. TELESCOPE POV: As it sweeps down from the night sky,
the focus adjusts and finds a beautifully maintained
farmhouse. A familiar face sharpens into view in the second-
floor window.
IT'S LANA.
She's sitting on her bed, laughing. As Clark peers through the
scope, he smiles. It's as though they're sharing a private
joke. Something about Lana instantly warms his soul. But then
WHITNEY
pounces onto the bed, causing Lana to laugh even harder.
47. INT. LANA'S BEDROOM - NIGHT
She playfully throws a copy of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" at him,
causing him to wince in pain as it hits him in the shoulder.
She looks at him, suddenly concerned.
LANA
Whitney, what's wrong with your shoulder?
WHITNEY
I've been puting in some extra practice.
LANA
Worried about that football scholarship?
WHITNEY
If I choke at the game on Saturday, I
can kiss Kansas State goodbye.
LANA
Take off your jacket.
He does. She begins massaging his shoulder.
LANA
I'll let you in on a little secret,
there's more to you than football.
WHITNEY
I just don't want to be a "remember
him". Smallville's already got enough
of those guy's.
Lana unclasps the necklace that hangs around her neck. Flecks
of light radiate from the green stone on the end.
LANA
I want you to wear this on Saturday.
She hands him the necklace.
WHITNEY
I can't take this Lana.
LANA
You can give it back after you win.
He peers at the greeen stone.
WHITNEY
Is it really made from the piece of
the meteor that...you know?
Lana nods sadly.
LANA
So much bad luck came out of it, there
can only be good luck left.
They share a moment, then as he leans in and kisses her
48. CLARK
Turns away. It's too hard for him to watch. Only now do we
realize that he hasn't been using the telescope at all. He's
been observing them with his own eyes, literally gazing at Lana
from afar. OFF his face of conflicted emotion.
So freshman, Lana--15 yrs. old maybe--is with her boyfriend in her bedroom
making out. Nell must be very liberal. I see why they toned it down for
the aired version. Also notice how Clark doesn't really need the
telescope--he has telescopic vision. This must have been cut out also and
maybe it exaggerated Clark's voyeuristic tendencies.
Hopefully Outlook won't destroy the formatting.
