Thanks for refreshing my memory about that. I had totally forgotten
Lex's motive.
Although it would've been nice for Lex to just tell Lana that Lionel
was going to turn her in if she didn't give up the stone. Or have
Lionel blackmail Lana directly.
Although, all this happened supposedly after Clark's spirit made Lionel
"good".
That was another weak part of the end of season 4. They go through all
this trouble to make Lionel reformed, and then they can't resist making
him evil again for a few episode.
If Lionel really wanted the stones as bad as he did at the end of the
season, why did he give Jason, Clark, and Lana all the help in finding
the stones? Didn't he even fly Clark and Lana to China? And didn't he
say something like either Lana or Clark were the chosen ones to Lex?
Makes no sense that he'd do a 180 at the end.

Except Lex knew from Lana's constant complaining that Clark was feeding
her "lies, lies, lies". I would've rather had seen Lex portrayed as a
false friend who pretended to give Clark and Lana good advice about
their relationship, but was actually helping rip them apart. I mean, if
you want to make the guy evil or have a "dark side", he actually has to
be a little more threatening than Frasier Crane. Instead, Lex listened
to all the whining and tried his best to help them work it out, like a
good friend.
