If the cosmic dust is traveling near the speed of light and will
arrive here in 2014, then it must be about 8 or 9 light years
distant, now.

Asteroids are completely contained within our Solar system, mostly
between Jupiter and Mars, there are none 8 or 9 light years distant.
Things we can see beyond our planets are stars, nebula, galaxies,
etc., but nothing the size of a planet much less an asteroid. We
know about a few huge planets in other star systems, but we cannot
see them.
The nearest star Alpha Centauri is about four light years distant.
