Well, slick is subjective...personally, it was not nearly as
'fantastic' as
the original pilot episode of LIS. But sci-fi has become more common
place and somehow diluted at the same time since those times.
By fantastic, I mean that it sparked the imagination of a country
actually
taking it's first steps going to the moon.
Was such a man-made flying saucer possible?
And then you're seeing the inside of it. It looks all too real.
Your reality is being suspended...and that's the ultimate goal of any
dramatic performance.
Reminicing aside...
the new pilot was fine. Naturally, computer generated SFX are
employed,
but not overly so. The acting was good, the casting was good,
the costumes were fair-good, the writing was fair-good, the
****p was fair-good, the action was good, the sets were good.
Was it genius on director Woo's part the way some people say?
No.
It takes from the original, but adds some different elements.
Without giving away spoilers, I would give it about a 7 out of 10.
In comparrison to the original pilot, which I would give a solid
9 out of 10.
And I'm a tough but fair rater.
But given the times we live and the time
constriants involved in such an expensive production,
it is what it is, and will never be more than that, as this pilot
goes anyway.
I would like to see it done right, with a full season building to the
climax of a launch, and not just jumping of to a star system like
going to your local quickie mart for a slushy.
