It's somewhat disappointing, the number of characters who have been doing
things not in character and not sup****ted by anything in the story.
This has been so ever since Michael murdered Ana Lucia and Libby,
ostensibly
because he felt he had to in order to get his son back. There was nothing
in
Michael's behavior previously that sup****ted his being capable of such a
thing, and his doing it was a very weak part of the story. His misson for
the Others was simply to get Ben free, and then bring the four on the list
into the trap (which in itself doesn't make a lot of sense -- the only one
the Others needed was Jack).
It's annoying when writers throw in something like a surprise double
murder
just for shock value. It was effective at the time all right, but if the
viewer thinks about it afterward he realizes he's been cheated. So this is
sort of an indication that you're expected to turn your brain off when you
watch the series.
Then in last season's finale we had Locke throw a knife into Naomi's back,
for no really good reason, and again, completely out of character for
Locke.
Now we have Jack ("I am not a murderer") attempt to murder a helpless
Locke
for murdering Naomi. And with an "empty" S&W .38 Special -- a weapon which
is practically impossible *not* to notice that it's empty, but I'll give
that a pass. The thing is it's out of character for Jack, but then Jack
seems to be such an inconsistent dip**** anyway I suppose there's no
surprise there.
And Sawyer turning all warm, sensitive and sympathetic with Hurley over
the
loss of his friend Charlie ("You want to talk about it?") -- puh-lease. He
might as well have asked, "You want a hug?" This is not the Sawyer we know
and love. ;-)
