Let's go with an assumption that is, so far, not proven. Let's assume
that when people see an apparition of a dead person (Yemi, Jack's dad,
etc.) that the apparition is Smokey taking the form of the person. Now,
we know that these apparitions can apparently interact with people
physically. Apparently, Charlie could interact with Hurley physically.
If the explanation for that is that Charlie is an apparition caused by
Smokey, that means that Smokey may have gotten off the island.
Food for thought.
Even if Smokey is not the apparitions, you could still conclude that
whatever creates the apparitions may have escaped the island.
