I'll jump in and offer a POV. I hope tdciago chimes in also with her view.
Lost is layered like a cake or a casserole. Lost is multi-tiered.
Most fans of Lost are only interested in the layers near the surface, and
that's ok.
The top layers are fun and filling and satisfying enough that many fans
don't want or need more to satiate their hunger.
The greek mythological layer (3rd level) and the real world layer (4th
level) are 2 of the hidden layers that are there, hidden, and not
necessary to see or understand, to enjoy Lost.
Lost level 3, I imagine, will be explained in the DVD set after the series
finishes.
Lost level 4 will never be explained by the show creators. (see
Cloverfield tap and dance explanations, for a 'Lost Explained' scenario)
Level 4 will be explored by your children in the university in one of
those Dante Commedia cl*****, where the politics of hell is discussed.
