I completely agree that they're including *many, many* different
things to create this very rich, layered story (as thinbluemime
stated). But what I've discovered in reading about various myths,
religions, and scientific theory is that the farther back one goes,
the closer all of these sources come to saying exactly the same
thing. When you go all the way back to the creation myths and the
scientific theories of creation, you see that the myths are expressing
the same ideas as the science. It's really fascinating.
So I think the island is extremely ancient. As in, all the way back
to the beginning. And that's why it's so im****tant, and why it's
vital to protect it from any threat.
I think the producers can get that across to everyone in the
audience. They'll add their own original flourishes to it, but the
basic story is very old. So all those viewers who have been watching
the show on the top layer will be satisfied, and the viewers who are
interested in all the underlying layers will have a field day studying
the show in retrospect.
