Lost?
You still will be
The eagerly anticipated return of Lost is here. But
according to Naveen Andrews, who plays Sayid, don't
expect too many answers.
TV Guide: How much can you reveal about the next
season of Lost?
Naveen: I can't even say whether I have a flash-forward
or not because they (the producers) are all so
frightened of anything coming out.
TV Guide: Why is the title of the first episode this
season, The Beginning of the End?
Naveen: They have already shown you a glimpse of the
future at the end of last season because you saw Jack
and Kate off the island. So you get to know that some
people do get off the island, but you also see what
they've become and you don't know why. It really makes
you ask, "What could possibly have happened to turn
them into this?"
TV Guide: So can't you hint if Sayid has a
flash-forward?
Naveen: That's an awfully vicious question in the
context of my current predicament, but I will just say
that you may see a character or two or three in the
future and there is a dramatic ****ft. You will get to
see how these people have changed over two years and,
in some cases, it will be a complete 180-degree ****ft.
TV Guide: Do you have any theories about what is going
on this season?
Naveen: No, it's a losing game to have theories on this
show. You come to terms with what you think logic would
dictate in terms of the way the show should go and then
you're frustrated at every turn because the writers
have different ideas.
TV Guide: Were you sad when fellow Brit Dominic Monaghan
was killed off?
Naveen: Yes, I miss him and the fact we could go off
into our English comedy routines and nobody else knew
what we were talking about. It's sad when you spend
three years with someone and they are just gone one day.
It seems rather brutal, but I don't walk around thinking
that I might die because I figure I probably will, so I
just try to enjoy it while it lasts!
TV Guide: Is it true we may see Dominic again in
flashbacks?
Naveen: No one is ever really gone on Lost. Just the
other day someone else who was dead and gone cropped up
in an episode and I was surprised to see them. So
corpses do come to life on this show - Dominic included.
TV Guide: How do you feel about the show now having
been given a finish date (2010)?
Naveen: I am grateful to have a job and grateful that
people are still interested in watching it, but it is a
real discipline to play the same character for a long
period of time and I can't believe this is the fourth
year I'm going to be doing it. But it's great to have a
definite ending in sight because that also helps
psychologically to know that we're aiming for a point
where the thing is going to be finished.
TV Guide: Can you talk about to your family or friends
about what happens on the show?
Naveen: It's not like working in the CIA, but we do
have to be careful. So we talk to our children and
partners and mostly just talk about it with each other.
Just today I was having a chat with Jorge Garcia (who
plays Hurley) because something serious went down and
when that happens on the show, you have to talk to
someone - just like you will want to when you watch it.
Did You Know?
* When Naveen was 16, he fell in love with his maths
teacher, Geraldine Feakins. The pair lived together
and she had his child, Jaisal, in 1992.
* His current girlfriend, Barbara Hershey, is 21 years
his senior, but age is clearly no problem. Last year
he told Esquire magazine, "Older women know who they
are and that makes them more beautiful than younger
ones. I like to see a face with some character. I
want to see lines. I want to see wrinkles."
* Although he ****trays an Iraqi on Lost, he is actually
British, of Indian descent. He was born in London on
17 January, 1969.
