Blocking the door from inside was the only way to keep desmond out
of this room (who realized that Penny was on the comm station), safe 
desmonds life and make sure that at least one person (Desmond) could
warn the losties, especially Claire.

alternative scenario:
* charlie closes door fromn outside
* desmond overpowers him, reopens door
* desmond talks as long as possible to penny
* too late to close door
* both are drowning
* nobody warns claire

So actually Charlie's final heroic deed wasn't stopping the
jamming signal and making the "rescue" possible, it was the
warning.
