They both freedove down to the station which implies either could have
ascended from it just as easily. Desmond should have got to throw a
quick I love you to Penny IMO. 

They certainly could have swam out the blownout ****t hole as it is
doubtful any of these island dwellers plan to repair the damage and
repressurize the one flooded room that has a working radio
anyway...let alone care about the entire station in any case given the
fact they are always consumed with destroying everything left there on
the island that could actually make life sweet...
