Ben told him that he didn't know, which is a major difference. If he's
telling the truth, then the monster was not created or even understood by
any of the surviving major groups we really have met: Survivors, Others,
French Lady. How much the Dharma Initiative knew, or was responsible for
various phenomenon, is still a mystery.
Apparently the emerging fifth group has at least some understanding of the
monster. Certainly Charlotte located (and has some appreciation of) the
polar bear in Morocco. It was wearing a collar with a Dharma logo, so
there
must be some connection between this fifth group and the Dharma folks.
