Ben is a confessed mass murderer worse than say Charles Manson.  He
probably 
either kidnapped Alex, or ostracized Danielle if he indeed is the true 
father.  Why would he care about saying something inappropriate?  I know 
that the writers are keeping Ben alive because he is such an interesting 
character.  In reality, both Ben and Locke would be dead if the situation 
actually happened-possibly Jack too.
