Of course it was in bad taste, and most fathers would never say that, but 
Ben is all about manipulating others.  You saw how Karl reacted, he was 
shocked, wasn't he?  Getting an emotional response is a big part of 
manipulation.  The only time Ben (apparently) isn't manipulating is when 
he's finally convinced that he has seconds to live if he doesn't give a 
straight answer.
