Jack found a gas mask in the box that fell from the helicoptor. I
thought his question "what's this for?" was a bit dumb as it's obvious
what a gas mask is for :)

But it suggests that they could have been worried about a problem that
might have affected the island at some time. If you remember Desmond
was in the bunker for a long time because he thought it wasn't safe to
go outside without a mask on, until he found out that wasn't the case.

There is also the time that Ben gassed his co workers.

Seeing a cow was probably a good sign as it showed that the air was ok
to breathe...

Or it may have been a line of dialogue that didn't mean anything in
particular.
