Vortices
We may not have discussed the idea of these 12 vortices specifically,
but we definitely have discussed wormholes, the Maelstrom /
whirlpool, and "A mouse does not rely on just one hole."
Quote: "It is surmised that the Island is a 'central dumping ground' -
the 'middle of a spiders web' to which boats and ****ps are drawn to
through the Vile Vortices."
I've speculated that this "dumping ground" idea was expressed visually
through the pneumatic tube in the Pearl station. I also think the
island golf course was hinting at various "holes" to the island.
S1E9 Hurley: It's two holes, for now. Three par, and no waiting.
Other clues have been things like the cave-in (where Charlie
discovered another way out) and Boone suggesting to Jack that "Maybe
we should do one of those hole things. You know, stick the pen in the
throat?" Locke also says in "The Moth" that if he widened the hole
in the cocoon and helped the moth out, it would be too weak to
survive. It's the struggle that strengthens it. This of course
foreshadows the Losties' struggle to get off the island.
