Thought for sure Hurley was going to defect to Jack's group first chance he
got based on 4:03 previews and hints from episode 2. Instead he
volunteered
to serve as bait to lure Sayid and Kate into complacency. I guess he
figures "In for a penny, in for a pound". He's the only one except Sawyer
who has stood up to Locke and perhaps naively hopes to talk John out of
doing anything excessive.
Sometimes it appears his character has inconsistencies, he is generally a
pacifist but used a VW microbus to kill when he saved the Lostie
demolition
team and then bragged about it over the Other's radio net. When John
admitted his hostage plan and proclaimed that the situation was beyond
compromise it clearly made Hurley uncomfortable, and caused second
thoughts.
I wonder if the writers are setting up a storyline for a disaffected
Hurley
becoming a mole and providing information to Jack's group?
