IIRC, there has been more than one mention of all of the passengers of
flight 815 not surviving. Then we have the Oceanic 6 that implies
(although
it hasn't been stated fully) that 6 people got off the island.
I'm beginning to think that the only way they can reconcile many of the
things that happen is alternate realities. I believe the island is the
"center" where many realities meet. That's how Jack's dad has made an
appearance and Ben's henchman and others have survived death.
The warning from Dan to make sure the helo left on the same vector implies
that depending on which vector you leave, determines which realitiy you go
to.
I think the Oceanic 6 got off the island but jumped into a reality where
only 6 survived. The guilt is what is eating up Jack and why he says they
have to go back. To try to come out on a vector where everyone survives
this time.
That would also explain why Kate isn't in jail. In the Oceanic 6 reality
she isn't a criminal. Also, would explain why she doesn't want to go
back.
The guy that sent in this latest team and tried to send Hurley to a
different facility is just one of the many people who know about the
island
but not exactly how to approach. I believe there are only certain safe
vectors and they need one of the Oceanic 6 to guide them in on the vector
they left the island with.
I also believe that's why the boat wasn't able to leave. Only certain
vectors allow passage to the outside world.
