Are you serious? They each appeared in six episodes prior to the one
in which they were killed off.
The producers introduced them into the cast in the beginning of Season
3 and sort of wrote them into the fabric of the beach camp as if they
had been there the whole time. There was a general backlash toward
the characters from the fans, who couldn't stand Nikki and Paolo, and
they were killed off because of it.

To each his own. I thought it was filler, but it was fun filler
(unlike the Jack's tattoo saga which was filler and immensely
boring). Also it was a clever response to the fans' displeasure with
the two characters and their rather forced introduction into Season
3. This episode also revealed that Ben is actually aware of the Swan
Station and had been spying on it the whole time, which is kind of
im****tant. Among a number of other reveals.
Then again, you didn't even know Nikki and Paolo were in any episodes
prior to being killed, so you may not be the best authority on what
the storyline is and how much it had to do with anything else.
