Well, if you believe Hawkings, it may well be Desmond's destiny to
never leave the island (a kind of a curse).  He tried to sail off it,
but the universe "course corrected" to put him back where he
started...to turn the failsafe. I think the chopper ride is about to
get a bit...bumpy :-)

Reminds me of that old Abbott/Costello film "The Time of Their Lives"
where Bud Abbott is this ghost doomed to forever haunt this mansion,
and everytime he tries to leave, this invisible barrier bounces him
back on his butt :-)
