This explains the "island-wide" event that was used in the Purge,
though it remains to be seen how the animal life on the island
survived, as well as whoever was manning the Swan at that time.

I also wonder how either the Orchid or the Tempest -- depending on
where Charlotte and Daniel are headed -- is capable of emitting lethal
gas.  How does that fit in with electricity or (presumably) time
travel?  Does this narrow down the possibilities for the type of power
generation that is being used?
