Has the feel of a nuclear reactor venting. Huge amounts of cooling water  
and heavy water would be needed also. If a nuclear venting is the case,  
the gas would be toxic and radioactive.

The Swan Bunker might have been properly sealed against the gas, no matter
 
who was manning it at the time. I don't think Rousseau was on Island yet  
at the time of the Horace-Dharma-Roger Workman deaths, that resulted from 

the purge.

A neclear venting would not necessarily kill every living creature though.
 
The wind drift would have an effect. The radiation afterwards would be of 

more concern, I think. Maybe this is why women can't have babies....I am  
thinking out loud here....
