As far as we know, David Reyes is still alive unless an upcoming FF 
addresses his fate...  Maybe David's promise to be there when Hurley
returns 
from Australia is setting up another subplot to show his bad luck
continued 
to plague his relatives while he was on the Island?  I agree with your 
premise though, I think Hurley got the car running as soon as he got back
to 
the world to affirm that he didn't give up hope and trying to make own
luck.
