Remember, time p***** slowly on their island. It's only been three
months, their time. John knows a bit about Jacob-- he doesn't know
anything about the smoke monster. If he's gonna get his answers, he'd
want to start where he has no clue, because that knowledge will fill
the rest of the crevices.
