This is a desciption a friend of mine (MA English), also somewhat a LOST
fan, wrote for me.

And so to LOST and THE TEMPEST. Prospero is the mightily wronged Duke
of Milan who escapes from Milan to a magical island with his daughter
Miranda when his political position is usurped. Shakespeare describes
the island setting as "uninhabited." Eventually, those who have
wronged him are on board a ****p at sea. A Tempest whipped up by
Prospero the Magician casts them on shore of his island. Everyone
eventually comes to consciousness, even the islands spirits Ariel and
the wronged, deformed slave named Caliban who have been on the island
with father & daughter and for a long time before as well. Miranda
falls in love with one of the storm-tossed men, and all is eventually
well.
I've seen the play performed a number of times, and when it's done
well, Prospero "becomes" Shakespeare when he speaks the epilogue that
invites the audience to shatter the trance they've all been in by
their applause. But the illusions in the play have real effects. If
that's what the authors of LOST are aiming for, I'm in. Then, the
lady physician (juliet?) who comes to study why babies conceived on the
island
die with their mothers before birth might eventually be revealed as a
form of Miranda. Might explain Ben's "because you're mine" remark.
Prospero is a magician, prophet, Gandalfian sort of character. I'm
not certain whether or not Ben qualifies, though he can endure an
amazing amount of abuse with equanimity.
