I don't know.  If we could have been in the Lost writing room when
they wrote that first line for Ben, what do you really believe we
would hear them saying?


Version #1
"Let's have Ben claim that he was born on the island."
"But we've already planned it out, and we know he wasn't."
"Yes, exactly! When we see his flashback, we'll realize that he
actually only came to the island at a very young age.  And this will
help establish that he's a habitual liar."

Version #2

(FIRST CONVERSATION)
"Let's let the audience in on just a little info about Ben.  This
would be a good episode for him to tell Jack that he was born on the
island."
"Sounds good.  Then, later, we'll have his whole flashback episode
where we see him growing up in the Dharma barracks."

(SECOND CONVERSATION)
"Hmm, it just doesn't work to actually have him born on the island."
"That's how it looks to me too.  Looks like he arrives there when he's
about 10."
"So, what do we do?  I'm thinking that maybe he meant 'born' like
'born again.'  That, as far as he's concerned, he was actually 'born'
when he joined the Others."
"Could be.  But the guy's a liar.  We could also just have him get
caught in the lie later."
"Or flat out admit to it.  It would kind of help establish that he's a
habitual liar."
