I think that the producers have as much as said that the "black smoke
monster" IS the island (or at least a very small part of the island).

Apparently, it is intelligent, depending on how you read that scene
where it appears to Eko as Yemi, asks Eko (something like) whether he
wants to confess his sins, then turns back into black smoke and beats
Eko to death when it doesn't get the answer it wants.

I don't know if that's the best example, since it requires several
leaps which might seem reasonable to me but not to others.

Leap #1: Island = smoke monster.
Leap #2: Smoke monster = intelligent.

On a totally different topic... I had another thought, based on my
current guesses/understanding of the show and this new concept of "The
island won't let you die until you've finished your work."

What if someone died in a way that totally destroyed their body? Say,
they were burned to ash? Is it possible that the loose ashes would
still be alive, moving through the jungle, able to re-shape itself,
perhaps being heard as whispers?

Frankly, I don't like that theory as much as I like trying to tie the
black smoke monster in with the concept of "Dust" (from the book of
Genesis, by way of The Golden Compass and the rest of the "His Dark
Materials" trilogy). But it's a new theory, so I thought I'd throw it
out there.
