I had the same feeling about that line being significant.  If it's not
misdirection, maybe Australia's significance has to do with it being
"The Land Down Under" or "Oz"(clues about the nature of the island?)
or the site of one of the vortices connected to the island (Uluru?) or
the fact that it's the place that all the Losties have in common
(Aborigines and aliens?).
