Who killed Sayid's wife?

Let's start by saying who didn't. 

I don't think it was Ben. Ben had arrived in the Sahara desert after
Sayid's 
wife had been killed. I got the feeling Ben had just taken some kind of
funky 
Island->Desert express trip (and certainly not the sailboat as was
claimed). 
Ben certainly was advantaged by Sayid's belief that Widmore had his wife 
killed, but I'm not ready to jump to the conclusion that Ben had anything
to 
do with it.

The assassin that Ben identified, do we even know if he did the killing? 
The 
evidence was very cir***stantial. Why didn't Sayid ask the guy why he did
it, 
or who ordered it? Why take Ben's word for it? Sounds very un-Sayid to me.


But let's assume the assassin did the deed, and it was ordered by Widmore.

Why? what possible motive could there be? any speculation?
