To me the dead doctor implies that the future of the freighter may be in 
jeopardy. As far as why they didn't transmit before, recall that some bad 
things happened to the comm officer, Minkowski.

Also, there is the possibility that even if Widmore knew the position of
the 
freighter, he may not know the "route" necessary to reach the Island. Dan 
know the appropriate heading, but we don't know that this was communicated
to 
the folks on the freighter before Michael destroyed the radio.
