I think Ben knows more about the secrets of the island (the temple, the
Smoke Monster, Jacob, etc.), than he has let on so far. He can either
ask them for favors or even control them. Last night, he unleashed the
Monster in vengeance; that's the first time we've seen it used that way.
And he's probably the only one--Juliet told Kate she didn't know that
stuff.
If Widmore just killed Ben, who knows what might happen to Jacob and the
Smoke Monster. They might become uncontrollable. Widmore might get his
island back, but never be able to contact Jacob again--or maybe never
get the Smoke Monster back under control again.

Yes, during lunch hour at his old job in the box company, Locke used to
enjoy playing those military simulation games. (And got kidded about it
by other employees)
Locke's paralysis was cured by the island. And he was the first
Lostaway to encounter--something--Jacob? "The Eye of the Island"? He
had a vision and he seemed to be the first Lostaway to have a true
empathic rap****t with the island.
So yes, I think that the island or Jacob or some cosmic power has really
shown an interest in Locke; Ben envies Locke's empathic connection (it
didn't cure Ben's spinal tumor); and so Locke is going to be the
"apprentice" who becomes Jacob's Acolyte someday.
Notice that Hurley is good at games too--he won the Lottery. And, sure
enough, Hurley got to see Jacob too--and now all three of them are going
back to see Jacob. Something must go wrong in the case of Hurley
though, because he gets off the island. He doesn't end up as one of
Jacob's Acolytes.
