I don't think there is a motive, which is why I believe Ben did it (or had

it done on his behalf) in order to recruit a passionate assassin. I, too, 
would expect Sayid to ask a lot more questions but that would have been 
tedious and I think it can legitimately be chalked up to a desperate
widower 
making an impulsive decision.
