If you're talking about a showdown on any given hand, yes, luck can play a
big role. But in hi-only poker games, most hands don't come down to a
showdown. And if you ever watched professional poker players on tv, you
can
see that quite often, the winner of the pot doesn't have the best hand.
They
win because they played the hand the best- that takes skill.
As for picking up tells on the Internet, there are no physical ones but
there's still a lot to read. The average poker player doesn't mix up his
game play too much, which means that if you pay attention to your
opponent's
style and habits, you can adjust your own style to improve your chances of
winning. Knowing the odds of a particular hand winning a showdown is
im****tant but there are other factors that determine how much and how
often
you'll win a pot.
I'd put the luck factor for any given showdown at about 30%. But over the
course of a session or tournament, I'd say it's closer to 15%.
